Topmount, Undermount or Farmhouse?
Understand how each sink meets the countertop, what preparation it needs and which details to confirm before installation.
01. Topmount / Drop-In
The sink rim rests above the countertop opening. This arrangement can simplify replacement when the opening, cabinet and hardware are compatible. The raised rim needs attention during cleaning.
Installation overview
- Confirm the template. Match the template to the actual sink. Check cabinet clearance, faucet placement and mounting access. Do not trace the outer rim and subtract a fixed distance.
- Prepare the opening. Have the fabricator cut and protect exposed edges as required for the countertop material. Dry-fit the sink and check its seating.
- Seal the rim. Use the gasket or sealant specified for the sink and countertop. Apply it to the instructed location.
- Secure the sink. Fit the specified clips or hardware in the instructed sequence. Avoid overtightening. Remove excess sealant and observe the specified curing time.
02. Undermount
The sink is mounted beneath the countertop, leaving the countertop edge visible. This makes wiping the counter into the basin convenient, while demanding careful fabrication and reliable support.
Installation overview
- Agree on the reveal. Confirm whether the countertop will overhang the bowl, align with it or expose part of the rim. Use the exact model's approved template and reveal options.
- Prepare the surfaces. The fabricator finishes the opening and prepares the underside according to the countertop and mounting-system instructions.
- Plan permanent support. Use the manufacturer-approved brackets, anchors, rails or support frame appropriate to the sink's weight and countertop. Sealant alone is not a support system.
- Position, seal and secure. Apply the specified sealant and align the sink using suitable temporary support. Install the permanent mounting system as instructed.
- Allow curing and inspect. Keep temporary support in place for the required period. Check alignment, attachment and sealing before connecting and using the sink.
03. Farmhouse / Apron-Front Sinks
A farmhouse sink, also called an apron-front sink, has an exposed front that becomes part of the kitchen design. Installation requires coordination between the sink, cabinet front, countertop and permanent support.
Installation overview
- Confirm the actual sink and cabinet fit. Check the model's dimensions, apron profile, weight and cabinet requirements. Have the actual sink available before final fabrication, especially where the instructions require field measurements.
- Prepare the cabinet front. Have the installer modify or select a suitable cabinet to accommodate the apron, preserving the clearances and structure required by the sink and cabinet manufacturers.
- Install permanent support. Build or fit the approved frame, rails or other support system according to the model instructions. The support must carry the required installed load; sealant is not a substitute for structural support.
- Position and level the sink. Dry-fit the sink on its support. Check apron projection, door and drawer clearance, alignment and the specified relationship to the countertop.
- Complete the countertop and sealing. Have the fabricator follow the actual sink's dimensions and approved installation details. Apply compatible sealant, secure as instructed and allow the required cure time before plumbing checks and use.
Which approach suits your project?
Topmount
Consider it when a visible rim and accessible replacement suit your plans. Check opening coverage and keep the rim joint clean.
Undermount
Consider it for easy countertop wipe-down and an exposed countertop edge. Plan compatible fabrication and permanent support.
Farmhouse / Apron-front
Consider it for an exposed-front focal point. Plan cabinet-front preparation, countertop coordination and model-specific permanent support.
Before the first use
- Confirm all required mounting components and supports are installed.
- Observe the sealant or adhesive manufacturer's cure time.
- Have plumbing connections completed and check for leaks during filling and draining.
- Inspect the rim joint, cabinet interior and drain connections.
- Keep the model instructions and mounting documentation for future service.
Frequently asked questions
Is an undermount sink simply glued underneath?
No. Sealing and structural support serve different functions. Follow the approved mounting system for the sink and countertop.
Can a farmhouse sink fit an existing cabinet?
It depends on the actual sink and cabinet. The cabinet front, doors, support system and countertop may need modifications. Have the installer assess the project before ordering.
Can I use one cutout size for all sinks?
No. Use the correct model's template and verify it against the actual sink before fabrication.
