01. Understand sink dimensions

A sink's advertised size is only one part of the decision. Review its overall dimensions, usable bowl space and minimum cabinet size together.

Overall length and width

Check the complete left-to-right and front-to-back dimensions. These include parts such as the rim that do not add usable washing space. Measurement labels may differ between manufacturers.

Interior bowl dimensions

Compare the interior basin dimensions with the pans and trays you use most. Rounded corners, dividers and accessory ledges can affect how cookware fits.

Know the difference: Overall sink size, countertop cutout size and minimum cabinet size are separate measurements. Do not use one in place of another.

02. Measure before you choose

Record your measurements and take photos above and below the countertop. Keep these with the drawing for the exact sink model you are considering.

  1. Identify the installation style. Note whether your sink is topmount, undermount or farmhouse.
  2. Measure the cabinet. Record overall width and usable interior space. Note braces, panels and other obstructions.
  3. Check the existing opening. For a replacement, document accessible cutout dimensions, corner shape and countertop thickness. Ask your installer to verify concealed measurements.
  4. Review surrounding space. Account for the faucet, backsplash, mounting hardware, plumbing and any disposal below the sink.
  5. Compare the model-specific requirements. Have your installer review the minimum cabinet size, cutout and installation instructions before ordering.
Before cutting: Have the actual sink and its installation template available. The existing sink's visible outline is not a cutting template.

03. Balance bowl depth and comfort

A deeper bowl can provide room for taller cookware, but comfortable reach matters too. Countertop height, mounting style and your working position all affect how the basin feels in use.

Compare depth alongside the interior footprint. Extra depth does not make a narrow basin wide enough for a large tray.

Have the installer check space for the drain assembly, disposal if used, plumbing and storage. Usable bowl depth and overall product height may describe different measurements; check the drawing.

04. Single bowl or double bowl?

Two similarly sized sinks can offer different usable space. Choose the layout around your everyday tasks.

Single bowl

An uninterrupted basin can suit larger cookware. Compare its interior dimensions with your frequently used pans and trays.

Double bowl

Separate basins can help organize washing and rinsing. Check each bowl's dimensions, the divider height and the drain arrangement.

05. Your pre-order checklist

  • Confirm the exact model and installation style.
  • Review overall and interior bowl dimensions.
  • Check the stated minimum cabinet size.
  • Verify the opening against the new model's requirements.
  • Review faucet, mounting and plumbing clearances.
  • Have your installer confirm any required modifications.

Avoid a universal clearance formula. Required space depends on the sink, cabinet construction and installation method.

06. Common sizing questions

Will the same advertised sink size fit my opening?

Not necessarily. Cutouts, corner shapes and mounting details can differ. Compare the existing opening with the new sink's drawing and template.

Can I replace my sink with a larger one?

It depends on the countertop, cabinet and installation requirements. Ask your installer to assess possible modifications before ordering.

Is a deeper sink always better?

Choose for cookware capacity, comfortable reach and under-counter space. Check the bowl, drain and plumbing arrangement together.

What size should I choose for a small kitchen?

Start with cabinet space and the selected model's requirements. Balance usable bowl space with the countertop area you want to keep for preparation.
