Our new sink came with a metal protector that protected the bottom of the sink. This made it less of a concern about dropping pots and pans in the metal sink and causing dings and dents. However, having to clean the grill grate, especially the underside, was becoming a bit messy. The silicone grill is easy to flip over itself to clean one side of the sink at a time. It also does not seem to get as messy as the metal grill did. It does need to be cleaned every so often and it just goes into the dishwasher for a more thorough cleaning than could be done with a sponge wipe. As a replacement for the original metal grill, I would say that it provides just as much protection and it seems a bit quieter to use as well.

This is a very nice product. Protects my sink and easy to roll up to clean the sink and the mat.
